The Church instituted the feast of the “Chair of St. Peter” to honor the “Prince” of the Apostles. According to the Roman calendar it has been celebrated on February 22 since the year 354. In order to conserve this precious relic, Pope Alexander VII enclosed the Cathedra Petri above the apsidal altar of St. Peters in an enormous casing of bronze. The Cathedra Petri is supported by four Doctors of the Church, St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St Athanasius, and St. Chrysostom. This beautiful masterpiece was done by Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini who also designed the baldacchino within St. Peters.
